They are separate. ASHA requires 30 professional development hours every three years, including 1 in ethics and 2 in Content Area 2 since 2026, plus annual dues. Each state license renews on its own cycle with its own hours and required topics. Most boards accept ASHA-approved courses, but renewing one never renews the other.
If you hold ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence and a license in one or more states, you are keeping at least two sets of books. ASHA tracks professional development hours over a three-year interval. Each state board tracks its own continuing education over its own cycle, with its own required topics and deadlines. Hours often count for both, but the deadlines never move together on their own.
Start with the rule that matters most: renewing the CCC does not renew a state license, and renewing a license does nothing for the CCC. ASHA itself says the CCC is not a permit to practice. More on that in why ASHA's CCC is not a state license.
What does ASHA require to keep the CCC current?
ASHA's certification maintenance standards require every CCC-A and CCC-SLP holder to:
- earn and report at least 30 professional development hours (PDHs) in each three-year certification maintenance interval;
- abide by the ASHA Code of Ethics; and
- keep affiliation by paying annual dues or the annual certification fee.
Since January 1, 2026, those 30 hours must include 1 PDH in ethics and 2 PDHs in what ASHA calls Content Area 2: topics that help you serve people with a range of histories, values and circumstances, or that build self-reflection and collaboration with colleagues, students, fellows and assistants. ASHA says anyone in the 2023 to 2025 interval who had not yet met the requirement could finish under either the old or the new standard.
Clinical supervisors and clinical fellowship mentors have one more, one-time item: 2 hours of professional development in supervision after being awarded the CCC.
What happens if you miss the ASHA deadline?
Each year on April 1, ASHA changes the status of certificate holders who missed PDH reporting or dues to "Not Current." While Not Current, you cannot use the CCC credential, ASHA's verification lists you as "CCC Not Current," and hours students or clinical fellows earn under your supervision cannot count toward their ASHA certification. You have until August 31 to fix it. Miss that date and you face reinstatement requirements to regain the CCC.
None of that touches your state license. A board can renew you while ASHA shows you Not Current, and a board can let your license lapse while your CCC is spotless.
How do state renewal cycles compare?
Here is how a dozen states set the license side, from their own boards' pages and rules:
- Texas: licenses run two years. SLPs and audiologists complete 20 hours, including 2 in ethics, and a human trafficking prevention course approved by the state's Health and Human Services Commission. Dual licensees need 30 hours. There is no grace period for an expired license.
- California: 24 hours per two-year renewal for an SLP or audiologist, with no more than 12 in self-study; the first renewal needs 12. Renewals fall on the last day of your birth month.
- New York: 30 hours in each three-year registration cycle, at least 20 in a professional area, and only two-thirds by self-directed online study.
- Illinois: at least 20 hours per two-year cycle, including one hour of ethics. Every SLP and audiology license expires October 31 of odd-numbered years, whenever it was issued.
- Pennsylvania: 20 clock hours per biennium per license, including 2 hours of approved child abuse recognition and reporting. Excess hours do not carry over.
- Ohio: 20 hours in the two years before renewal, at least 10 in your area of licensure and at least 2 in ethics, with no carryover.
- Massachusetts: 20 hours every two years, at least 10 in your area of licensure; 30 hours for dual licensees.
- West Virginia: 20 hours per two-year period, including one hour of ethics per year. Licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years.
- Georgia: 20 clock hours each biennium. Licenses expire March 31 of odd-numbered years, with late renewal through April 30.
- Washington: 30 hours every three years, including infection control, health equity training and the jurisprudence exam in the first cycle. The license itself renews every year on your birthday.
- North Carolina: 30 hours in each three-year cycle, while the license renews every year.
- Louisiana: at least 10 hours every license year, July 1 through June 30, with 3 of those hours related to hearing aid dispensing for audiologists who dispense.

Can one course count for ASHA and a state?
Usually, yes. Most boards accept ASHA-approved continuing education. Texas accepts courses from providers approved by ASHA, the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the American Academy of Audiology or the Texas Academy of Audiology. California accepts ASHA, AAA and California Medical Association providers, accredited colleges and board-approved providers. North Carolina says CEUs and hours recognized by ASHA for certification maintenance are accepted.
The catch is the required topics. ASHA's ethics hour may satisfy Ohio's 2 ethics hours only halfway. Pennsylvania's child abuse hours must come from a course approved by its Bureau in consultation with the Department of Human Services. Texas's human trafficking course must be HHSC-approved. A general ASHA course does not satisfy those.
Which state lets you line up with ASHA?
North Carolina is the clearest example. Its board lets licensees elect to sync their three-year continuing education cycle with their ASHA cycle, running January 1 of the first year through December 31 of the third. You can change your cycle only once, by written request. New York's three-year cycle matches ASHA's length but runs on your own registration dates.
Why does the license date matter more than the ASHA date?
A lapsed license stops you from practicing. Texas says plainly that there is no grace period and you may not practice without a current license. Georgia says a license not renewed by the end of April lapses back to the March 31 expiration date, and practicing on it can draw discipline for unlicensed practice. Massachusetts says a licensee with a lapsed license is not authorized to practice.
If you hold an ASLP Compact privilege, the home license date matters even more. The Commission says a privilege shows "Inactive" in CompactConnect after the home license's printed expiration date, even during a home-state grace period, and recommends renewing the home license at least 10 business days early. See renewing ASLP privileges with your home license.
How do you keep several renewals straight?
Put every expiration date on one calendar, with the continuing education rules for each, and work backward from the earliest. Our post on keeping several SLP license renewals on one calendar shows a working layout. Our Annual Renewal and CE Compliance service is $299 per license, per year: we track each license's date and required topics, remind you ahead of each deadline, and check your certificates against each state's rules. You complete the courses and sign the renewal attestations yourself. Board and ASHA fees are separate.
Common questions
- How many hours does ASHA require to maintain the CCC?
- At least 30 professional development hours per three-year interval. Since January 1, 2026, that includes 1 hour of ethics and 2 hours in ASHA's Content Area 2. Supervisors and CF mentors also need a one-time 2 hours in supervision.
- Do my ASHA hours count toward my state license?
- Often. Most boards accept ASHA-approved providers. State-specific topics, such as Pennsylvania's child abuse training or Texas's human trafficking course, must come from courses the state approves.
- What happens if my CCC goes Not Current?
- ASHA marks it Not Current on April 1 and you cannot use the credential. You have until August 31 to meet the requirements; after that, reinstatement rules apply. Your state license is unaffected either way.
- Can I line up my state CE cycle with ASHA?
- In North Carolina, yes. The board lets licensees sync their three-year CE cycle with their ASHA cycle once, by written request.
