Renewing ASLP Privileges With Your Home License

An ASLP Compact privilege expires on the same date as your home-state license, and CompactConnect marks it Inactive the day after that date even if your state allows a grace period. The order of operations for renewing, why the Commission says to renew your home license at least ten business days early, and what deactivates a privilege outright.

An ASLP Compact privilege expires with your home-state license and is renewed by buying it again in CompactConnect after your home license is renewed. Grace periods do not count: CompactConnect shows the privilege as Inactive after the printed expiration date. The Commission recommends renewing your home license at least ten business days early.

An ASLP Compact privilege does not have its own renewal date. It lives and dies with your home-state license. The model law says a privilege "is valid until the expiration date of the home state license" (Section 4.G), and the Commission's FAQ says you renew your privileges on the same cycle as your home license, whether that is every year or every two years.

That sounds simple. The trap is the order in which you do things, and what happens if your home renewal runs late.

Why doesn't a grace period protect your privileges?

Some state boards allow a grace period or late renewal after the expiration date. The compact does not honor it. The Commission's FAQ answers the question directly: renewing your license after your state's expiration date, even during a grace period, "will impact your eligibility to continue practicing under your compact privilege." CompactConnect "will automatically display your eligibility status as 'Inactive' after your state's indicated license expiration date, if your state license is not renewed by the expiration date, regardless of the grace period."

The reason is mechanical. CompactConnect can only judge eligibility by the expiration date your state reports, and states upload data on different schedules. So the printed expiration date on your home license is the hard edge for every privilege you hold.

How early should you renew your home license?

The Commission's own recommendation: "We strongly recommend that practitioners renew their state license at least ten business days prior to the home state license expiration date shown in CompactConnect so that they can renew their privilege(s) in CompactConnect without any interruption."

Ten business days is two calendar weeks, and more around holidays. If your home board has a CE audit or a fingerprint step at renewal, give yourself longer.

What is the right order of operations?

  1. Finish your home-state CE. Under the compact you only need CE for your home state; the FAQ says you "do not need to complete units for other states where they hold compact privileges."
  2. Renew your home license at least ten business days before it expires.
  3. Confirm the new expiration date shows in CompactConnect. The FAQ says to "ensure that your home state license reflects the renewed expiration date prior to renewing any compact privileges."
  4. Renew each privilege in CompactConnect. CompactConnect's help pages say states where you already hold a privilege appear greyed out "and cannot be selected until eligible for renewal." Once they are selectable, you buy them again.
  5. Re-attest and pay. The $50 Commission fee and the state fee are charged again for each privilege. If a state requires jurisprudence, check what it expects before you attest. See jurisprudence requirements.

What deactivates a privilege outright?

The Commission's FAQ defines "deactivate" for several situations:

  • Non-renewal of your home license terminates the active status of the home license "and all privileges to practice."
  • Non-renewal of a single privilege terminates only that remote state's privilege.
  • A move to a non-member state terminates all privileges. See your home state and the ASLP Compact.
  • Revocation or suspension of your home license terminates the home license and all privileges.

Discipline has a longer tail. If your home license is encumbered, the model law says you lose your privileges in every remote state until the encumbrance is lifted and two years have passed since the adverse action (Section 4.J). After that, you meet the Section 4.A requirements again to obtain new ones.

Can you practice while a privilege shows Inactive?

Treat Inactive as not authorized. The compact defines a privilege as legal authorization to practice in a remote state, and the authorization runs out with your home license's expiration date. If you see clients in a remote state during that gap, you are doing it without a license or privilege there. Stop scheduling remote-state clients until both your home license and the privilege show active again.

How does a privilege renewal compare with a state license renewal?

A separate state license has its own expiration date, its own CE rules and sometimes its own late-renewal options, and it keeps working if your home license has a problem. A privilege is cheaper and needs no extra CE, but it inherits every date and every problem of your home license. For SLPs and audiologists who hold several privileges, a single missed home renewal can switch off all of them at once. See compact privilege or a state license?

Our Annual Renewal and CE Compliance service ($299 per license, per year) tracks your home license date, flags the ten-business-day target, follows your CE and reminds you when privileges become renewable. If you want help on the renewal session itself, the Compact Privilege Concierge ($299 for the first privilege, $149 for each additional) is a guided screen-share where you attest and pay yourself. See the ASLP Compact hub.

Common questions

Does my ASLP privilege have its own expiration date?
No. The model law says a privilege is valid until your home-state license expires. Each renewal of your home license means buying the privilege again.
My state has a grace period. Am I covered under the compact?
No. The Commission's FAQ says CompactConnect shows your privilege as Inactive after your license's printed expiration date regardless of any grace period.
Do I need continuing education for each privilege state?
No. The FAQ says you only need to meet your home state's CE requirements, not those of states where you hold privileges.
Why can't I select my privilege state to renew it yet?
CompactConnect greys out states where you already hold a privilege until they are eligible for renewal. Renew your home license first and confirm the new date shows in CompactConnect.
