SLP and audiology licenses renew on different systems: a fixed statewide date (Illinois October 31 of odd years, Georgia March 31 of odd years, Alabama every December 31), your birth month (California) or your issue date (Texas). Build one calendar with each credential, its CE deadline and renewal window, and renew a compact home license ten business days early.
One license is easy to keep current: one notice, one fee, one batch of CE. Three or four licenses are a scheduling problem, because states do not agree on when licenses expire or how long they last. The usual failure is not forgetting a renewal entirely. It is assuming one state works like another.
Why don't renewal dates line up?
States use three different systems.
One date for everyone
- Illinois: every SLP, audiology and SLPA license expires October 31 of odd-numbered years, whatever the issue date.
- Georgia: renewal is due by March 31 of odd-numbered years, with late renewal April 1 to 30.
- Indiana: SLP and audiology licenses expire December 31 of odd-numbered years; support personnel licenses expire every December 31.
- Alabama: licenses expire December 31 following issuance or renewal, so every Alabama license renews every year (Ala. Admin. Code r. 870-X-4-.01).
- Florida: the board's page says current licenses expire at midnight Eastern time on December 31, 2027.
The catch with a fixed date is a short first term. An Illinois license issued in the summer of an odd year can be due for renewal that October.
Your birth month
California renews SLP and audiology licenses every two years on the last day of your birth month, and the first license runs anywhere from 13 to 24 months to get you onto that cycle. DC Health has been moving all its licenses to expire on the last day of the holder's birth month since June 16, 2024.
Your issue date
Texas issues SLP, audiology and assistant licenses for two years and intern licenses for one, counted from issuance. New York runs on three-year registration periods.
What else runs on its own clock?
- Add-on licenses. A California dispensing audiologist license renews every year, on the birth month, while the audiology license renews every two. See hearing aid dispensing licenses.
- ASHA. The CCC needs annual dues and 30 professional development hours every three years. None of it renews a state license.
- Compact privileges. A privilege expires with your home license. The Commission marks it inactive at the home license's printed expiration date, even during a grace period, and recommends renewing the home license at least ten business days early so you can renew the privilege in CompactConnect without a gap. See renewing ASLP privileges with your home license.
- School credentials. Education department certificates have their own cycles. ASHA's New York page, for example, lists 100 hours of professional development every five years for the teaching certificate.
- Fingerprint retention. Florida charges a retention fee at renewal when your prints are due to expire, and Texas tells some licensees 90 days ahead that they need new prints before they can renew.
When does each renewal window open?
Earlier than most people use it. Texas licenses are eligible for renewal 60 days before expiration, and TDLR sends notice at least 30 days ahead. Florida's portal shows a renewal option no later than 90 days before expiration. Iowa allows renewal up to 60 days early. California says online renewals can process in 24 to 48 hours while mailed forms take 6 to 8 weeks. Renewing as soon as the window opens costs nothing and removes the risk of a slow week at the board.
What if the renewal notice never arrives?
That is your problem, not the board's. TDLR says non-receipt of a renewal notice "does not exempt you from meeting license renewal requirements." Indiana's licensing agency says once a notice is sent to the address or email on file, "the duty of the Board has been performed." Pennsylvania's rules require you to report an address change in writing within 10 days (49 Pa. Code § 45.13). Every move is a reason to update your address with every board.
How do you build one renewal calendar?
- List every credential: each state license, assistant or dispensing license, school credential, compact privilege and the CCC, with numbers and expiration dates.
- Note the cycle and rule for each: fixed date, birth month or issue date, and how far ahead you can renew.
- Attach the CE: hours, required topics and the date they must be finished. Texas charges a late fee if CE is not complete before expiration. See CE requirements across states.
- Set three reminders per credential: when the window opens, 30 days out and 10 business days out.
- Renew the home license first if you hold compact privileges, then the privileges.
- Keep confirmations and CE certificates together by license and cycle for audits.
If something has already lapsed, see reinstating a lapsed license before you treat another patient.
How can we keep the calendar for you?
Our Annual Renewal and CE Compliance service is $299 per license, per year. We build and maintain the calendar for every license, privilege and certification you hold, tell you which CE counts where, remind you when each window opens, and prepare the renewals for you to review and submit. You attest to your CE and pay the board fees, which are separate.
Common questions
- When do Illinois SLP licenses expire?
- October 31 of every odd-numbered year, regardless of when the license was issued, according to IDFPR. A license issued late in the cycle can come up for renewal within months.
- How early can I renew a Texas SLP license?
- Texas licenses are eligible for renewal 60 days before expiration. TDLR sends a notice at least 30 days ahead, but not receiving it does not excuse a late renewal.
- Does my compact privilege renew with my home license?
- No. A privilege expires with your home license and must be renewed in CompactConnect after the home license is renewed. The Commission recommends renewing the home license at least ten business days before it expires.
