Board fees for an SLP or audiology license run from $50 for Pennsylvania's initial license to $294 for New York's licensure and first registration; Texas and California list $150 and Florida $180 or $280 by issue date. Add score reports, fingerprints, exams and verifications. Compact privileges cost $50 plus a $25 to $150 state fee.
Licensing fees are one of the few parts of a move you can plan to the dollar, as long as you count everything. The board's application fee is the visible part. The rest is spread across ETS, fingerprint vendors, jurisprudence exam vendors, the boards that verify your old licenses and, if you renew late, penalties. Every figure below comes from a board page, fee schedule or rule we read in October 2026. Fees change, so confirm the current amount with the board before you pay.
What do boards charge for an SLP or audiology license?
New York
The State Education Department lists $294 for licensure and first registration. Registration runs on a three-year cycle. The optional Limited License for people completing supervised experience is $70 and is valid for one year. New York notes that the fee due is the one in law when your application is received, and you will be billed the difference if fees rise.
Texas
TDLR's application pages list $150 for an SLP or audiologist license, including a two-year initial license, $75 for an intern license including one year, and $150 for an SLP assistant license including two years. Renewal is $100 for an SLP, audiologist or assistant and $75 for an intern.
California
The board's fee schedule, effective November 1, 2021, lists $150 for the SLP or audiology application and the same for each renewal, $35 for an RPE temporary license, $30 for a six-month temporary license for someone licensed in another state, $25 for a delinquent renewal and $25 for a license verification. SLPAs pay $50 to apply and $100 to renew. The board states that all fees are non-refundable.
Florida
Florida's SLP page prices a new license by when it will be issued in the two-year cycle. A license issued from August 1 of an odd-numbered year through December 31 of an even-numbered year costs $280: a $75 non-refundable application fee, a $200 licensure fee and a $5 unlicensed activity fee. One issued from January 1 through July 31 of an odd-numbered year costs $180, because the licensure fee drops to $100 for the shorter term. The page's MOBILE endorsement section lists a $180 total, including the $75 non-refundable fee.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania's fees are set in its rules (49 Pa. Code § 45.1): $50 for an initial license, $65 for biennial renewal, $50 for a provisional license, $30 to renew a provisional license and $15 for a certification of licensure.
Indiana
Indiana's Professional Licensing Agency lists a $100 renewal for SLP and audiology licenses, $50 for a Clinical Fellowship Year application, $50 to apply as SLP support personnel and $25 to renew. Reinstating a license expired three years or more costs $250, described as the $100 renewal fee plus the $150 initial application fee.
Illinois
Illinois builds a $45 Hearing Instrument Consumer Protection Act fee into every SLP and audiology license and renewal fee, collected for the state's hearing instrument program, according to IDFPR's qualifications sheet.
How do fees compare for clinical fellows and SLPAs?
Fellowship and assistant credentials are usually cheaper than a full license, but they are separate purchases on top of it. From the same pages and rules:
- Clinical fellows: $75 for a Texas intern license (one year), $35 for a California RPE temporary license, $70 for New York's optional Limited License, $50 for a Pennsylvania provisional license and $50 for Indiana's Clinical Fellowship Year registration. Moving to the full license then costs the full application fee; Texas lists $150 for the intern upgrade, and California credits the $35 toward its $150 fee.
- SLPAs and other support personnel: $150 for a Texas assistant license with a $100 renewal, $50 for a California SLPA application with a $100 renewal, $100 for an Alabama assistant registration with a $50 annual renewal, and $50 for Indiana support personnel with a $25 annual renewal.
Annual renewals add up. An Alabama assistant renews every year, while a Texas assistant renews every two. See fellowship credentials by state and which states license or register SLPAs.
Which costs sit outside the board fee?
- Praxis score reports. ETS lets you name four recipients free at registration. Each additional score report costs $50 per recipient. ASHA says the SLP and audiology Praxis exams move to PSI, a wholly owned ETS subsidiary, on January 11, 2027, so confirm score-report fees after that date.
- Jurisprudence exams. In Texas, the exam fee is paid to the vendor, and the registration expires 30 days after you pay; miss the window and you pay again.
- Fingerprints. Vendor and agency charges are separate from the board fee. Florida also charges $43.25 at renewal to retain your prints when the retention period is ending.
- Verifications from your other boards. Each old board charges its own fee, such as California's $25 and Pennsylvania's $15.
- Dispensing licenses. A California audiologist who dispenses pays $225 for the written exam, $500 for the practical and $280 for the license, then $280 a year. See hearing aid dispensing licenses.
How much does renewing late cost?
More than the renewal. Texas has no grace period: within 90 days of expiration you pay 1.5 times the renewal fee, between 90 days and 18 months twice the fee, and from 18 months to three years twice the fee with the executive director's approval. If you practiced in Pennsylvania while your license was expired, you pay a $5 late fee for each month or part of a month past the renewal date, on top of the renewal fee, and that payment does not stop the board from disciplining you (49 Pa. Code § 45.14). California's delinquent fee is $25. See reinstating a lapsed license.
What does an ASLP Compact privilege cost?
Each privilege carries a $50 Commission administrative fee, which the Commission's Rule on Fees says "shall be paid by the licensee," plus the state's own fee. The state fees on the Commission's table, current as of May 28, 2026, for the four states issuing privileges are Ohio $25, West Virginia $25, Louisiana $50 and Tennessee $150, and Tennessee and West Virginia also require a jurisprudence exam. Fees are non-refundable, and the rule allows a $100 charge for a failed electronic payment. A privilege lasts only as long as your home license, so you buy it again each home renewal cycle. See what an ASLP Compact privilege costs.
Why is the lowest fee not always the cheapest license?
Because the license period varies. A Texas intern license costs $75 but lasts one year. California's first full license runs from 13 to 24 months depending on your birth month. Georgia licenses all expire March 31 of odd-numbered years and Illinois licenses October 31 of odd-numbered years, so a license issued late in the cycle can be up for renewal within months. Florida builds the same idea into its fee, charging $100 less for a license issued in the shorter part of its cycle. Elsewhere, divide the fee by the months you actually get, and add the CE you will need to renew. See keeping several renewals on one calendar.
Can you get a refund if plans change?
Rarely. California says all its fees are non-refundable, Florida's $75 application fee is non-refundable, and compact fees are non-refundable. New York is an exception of sorts: an applicant who withdraws may be entitled to a partial refund, but anyone who later reapplies is treated as a new applicant who pays the full fee again.
Which of our prices apply?
Our fees are separate from every government, exam and vendor fee above. License by Endorsement is $599 per state, a Full State License Application is $749 per state, a Clinical Fellowship and Provisional License is $349 per state, an SLPA License or Registration is $399 per state, and Annual Renewal and CE Compliance is $299 per license, per year. For the compact, the ASLP Compact Readiness Review is $149, and the Compact Privilege Concierge is $299 for the first privilege and $149 for each additional one; in those sessions you apply, attest and pay the Commission and state fees yourself. Full details are on the pricing page.
