New Jersey is not in the ASLP Compact; bills A 2606 and S 788 are pending. Clinicians licensed in a substantially equivalent state can be licensed without proving a Praxis score, but still show an accredited degree, a clinical internship and the jurisprudence online orientation. A recent New Jersey resident can get a one-year temporary license.
New Jersey licenses speech-language pathologists and audiologists through the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Committee, under the Division of Consumer Affairs. The rules are in Chapter 44C of Title 13 of the New Jersey Administrative Code. The details below come from Chapter 44C as posted by the Division; confirm current forms on the Division's site before applying.
Is New Jersey in the ASLP Compact?
No. New Jersey has bills pending, A 2606 and S 788 on the Commission's map, but has not enacted the compact. Even after enactment, a state has to finish implementation, including FBI background checks, before issuing privileges. As of October 2026 only Louisiana, West Virginia, Ohio and Tennessee issue them. A New Jersey license is the only way to practice there.
What does a New Jersey license require?
Under N.J.A.C. 13:44C-3.2, an applicant shows:
- graduation from a doctoral or master's program in audiology, speech-language pathology or both, accredited by ASHA's Council on Academic Accreditation or the Accreditation Council for Audiology Education;
- a passing Praxis score in the field, administered by ETS;
- a clinical internship meeting 13:44C-3.5; and
- completion of the jurisdiction's jurisprudence online orientation.
The internship is at least 1,200 hours, completed in no less than nine months and no more than 18. For master's graduates it comes after the degree. It is supervised by someone licensed in New Jersey or a substantially equivalent state, or by a CCC holder if it takes place in an exempt setting or a state without comparable licensure. The supervisor provides at least one hour of on-site direct supervision for every 20 hours of direct services, at least monthly.
Can a licensed clinician skip the Praxis?
Yes, under 13:44C-3.4, "licensure without examination due to licensure in another state." If you hold a current license in a state with requirements substantially equivalent to New Jersey's, you do not need to prove a passing Praxis score. You still show the accredited degree, the clinical internship and the jurisprudence orientation. For an experienced SLP, documenting the internship usually means getting old fellowship paperwork or an ASHA verification together. Our post on SLP license by endorsement compares New Jersey with other states.
Is there a temporary license?
Two kinds, under 13:44C-5.2 and 5.3:
- Recent resident. If you became a New Jersey resident within the past six months and hold a current license in another state, you submit a notarized statement and proof of the license. The temporary license lasts one year and cannot be renewed.
- Clinical internship. Anyone completing the internship in New Jersey after the degree, including in an exempt setting, must hold a temporary license before starting. You submit a supervision plan signed by you and a New Jersey-licensed supervisor. It lasts 18 months or until the internship is finished, whichever comes first, and cannot be renewed.
Both require the jurisprudence online orientation. The recent-resident license does not help someone who lives in New York or Pennsylvania and commutes. See temporary SLP and audiology licenses and doing your clinical fellowship in a different state.
How does renewal work?
New Jersey licenses renew every two years. Under 13:44C-6.2, you complete 20 credit hours of continuing education related to audiology or speech-language pathology in the preceding biennial period. Licensees renewing for the first time are exempt. You confirm completion on the renewal application.
What else is specific to New Jersey?
The chapter has its own scope-of-practice sections for cerumen management by audiologists and for fiberoptic endoscopic examination of swallowing by SLPs, and a subchapter on telemedicine. If your work includes FEES or teletherapy into New Jersey, read those sections before you start. See dysphagia, FEES and other credentialed SLP procedures and teletherapy for SLPs across state lines.
Where do New Jersey files stall?
Three places. First, the internship: an experienced SLP has to prove a fellowship done years ago met New Jersey's hours and supervision rules, and old supervisors are hard to reach. Second, the orientation: it is required for every license type, including the temporary ones, and is easy to leave until the end. Third, timing for new residents: the recent-resident temporary license depends on having moved within the past six months, so a delayed application can miss the window.
How can we help in New Jersey?
We confirm whether you qualify for licensure without examination, rebuild your internship documentation, line up the jurisprudence orientation and, for new residents, file the temporary license with the full application. That is our License by Endorsement service at $599, or $749 for a full application. An internship temporary license for a clinical fellow is $349. Division fees are separate, and you review and sign the application. See New Jersey details on the New Jersey state page.
