What SLPs and audiologists miss in Wisconsin

Can I practice in Wisconsin on an ASLP Compact privilege?

Wisconsin has enacted the ASLP Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Until it does, practicing here takes a Wisconsin license, and a Wisconsin license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

  • Enacted, not issuing yet

Can an SLP or audiologist licensed elsewhere get a Wisconsin license by endorsement?

The board grants a license to an SLP or audiologist holding a current license in another state or territory whose requirements are substantially equivalent. When you apply, you choose a compact-eligible license or a single-state license.

  • Endorsement route available

Citation: Wis. Stat. 459.28; 459.24(3c)

Which exams does Wisconsin require for a license?

SLP applicants pass the exam required for ASHA certification or a board exam. Audiologists pass the exams the board selects by rule plus a board practical exam on hearing aid fitting, covering audiometry, masking and ear mold impressions, unless the board waives it for equivalent training.

Does Wisconsin offer a temporary SLP or audiology license?

A nonresident licensed in a substantially equivalent state can get a limited permit to practice in Wisconsin for no more than 45 days in a calendar year.

  • Temporary or limited license available

Citation: Wis. Stat. 459.32(2)

How do clinical fellows get licensed in Wisconsin?

A temporary license covers the SLP postgraduate fellowship when you practice under a Wisconsin-licensed SLP, meet the degree requirements and have applied for the next licensing exam. It can be renewed once.

  • Temporary license

Citation: Wis. Stat. 459.24(6)

What audiologists need to know in Wisconsin

Licensed audiologists and compact privilege holders may order, fit and sell hearing aids, following Wisconsin's receipt and guarantee rules. Audiologists may not use titles like "certified hearing aid audiologist."

  • Dispensing covered by the audiology license

How often does a Wisconsin SLP or audiology license renew?

Licenses renew every two years with 20 CE hours from approved programs. The first renewal after licensure is exempt from CE.

  • Renews every 2 years
  • 20 CE hours per cycle
