What SLPs and audiologists miss in Tennessee
- Tennessee issues compact privileges, and a privilege here requires the Tennessee jurisprudence exam plus a $150 state fee.
- Every new Tennessee licensee passes the state jurisprudence exam, even with an ASHA CCC.
- Reciprocity judges your other state's standards as of when you were licensed there, not today.
Can I practice in Tennessee on an ASLP Compact privilege?
Tennessee is issuing ASLP Compact privileges (since May 28, 2026). A speech-language pathologist or audiologist whose home state is also issuing can apply for a privilege to practice here through CompactConnect, and must apply, attest and pay personally. SLPAs and clinical fellows are not eligible.
- Issuing compact privileges
- Jurisprudence exam required for a privilege
Can an SLP or audiologist licensed elsewhere get a Tennessee license by endorsement?
Licensure by reciprocity requires that the other state's standards, when you were licensed there, at least equal Tennessee's current ones. Every state where you have ever held a license sends an official statement, including how the license was granted, such as by CCC, exam or grandfathering.
- Endorsement route available

Which exams does Tennessee require for a license?
Applicants without a current ASHA CCC pass the Praxis specialty test, using ASHA's passing score, with results sent directly to the board. Every applicant must also pass the Tennessee Jurisprudence Exam before licensure or reinstatement.
- Praxis exam
- State jurisprudence exam
How do clinical fellows get licensed in Tennessee?
Clinical fellows must hold a provisional license and work under a Tennessee-licensed or ASHA-certified SLP. The fellowship needs at least 36 supervisory activities: 18 one-hour direct observations and 18 indirect activities, with two of each every month. The supervisor need not be on site at all times.
- Provisional license

Does Tennessee license SLP assistants?
SLPAs need 60 college credits from an SLPA program, including 100 supervised field hours. Applicants short of the 100 hours register and get 30 to 90 days to finish them. SLPAs may not interpret tests, counsel families, change treatment plans, or sign anything without the supervising SLP's co-signature.
- Speech language pathology assistant registration
How often does a Tennessee SLP or audiology license renew?
Renewal requires attesting to completed continuing education, and reinstating a lapsed license requires CE for every year it was expired.
Licensing in Tennessee?
If your home state issues privileges too, a compact privilege may be the fastest route; you apply yourself, and we prepare you and sit with you while you do. For a license, we send your Praxis scores and verifications, file the application and carry the board correspondence. License by endorsement is $599 for an SLP or audiologist.
