What SLPs and audiologists miss in South Carolina

Can I practice in South Carolina on an ASLP Compact privilege?

South Carolina has enacted the ASLP Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Until it does, practicing here takes a South Carolina license, and a South Carolina license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

  • Enacted, not issuing yet

Can an SLP or audiologist licensed elsewhere get a South Carolina license by endorsement?

The board may license an SLP or audiologist holding a current license from a state with substantially equivalent standards, subject to other board requirements such as CE. A current ASHA CCC, or meeting the CCC standards, is also a direct route to licensure.

  • Endorsement route available

Which exams does South Carolina require for a license?

Applicants without the CCC need a passing score on a board-approved national exam. An intern licensee who has not yet passed it must do so within 12 months of the intern license.

How do clinical fellows get licensed in South Carolina?

An intern license goes to applicants with the graduate degree who still lack the exam, the supervised professional employment, or both. It is valid one year and can be renewed once for 12 months, and interns practice only under direct supervision.

  • Intern license

Does South Carolina license SLP assistants?

SLPAs are licensed and need a bachelor's in speech-language pathology plus a supervisory agreement and an on-the-job training plan filed with the application. They practice only under the direct supervision of an SLP, and the law points to ASHA's SLPA scope and supervision guidelines.

  • Speech-language pathology assistant license

How often does a South Carolina SLP or audiology license renew?

SLP, audiology and SLPA licenses renew every two years and expire March 31. SLPs and audiologists need 16 CE hours per period, interns and SLPAs 8. A license not renewed by March 31 is invalid, and reinstatement needs a renewal postmarked before May 1.

  • Renews every 2 years
  • 16 CE hours per cycle
