What SLPs and audiologists miss in Maryland

Can I practice in Maryland on an ASLP Compact privilege?

Maryland has enacted the ASLP Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Until it does, practicing here takes a Maryland license, and a Maryland license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

  • Enacted, not issuing yet

Can an SLP or audiologist licensed elsewhere get a Maryland license by endorsement?

The board may waive any licensing qualification for someone holding a current license in a state with at least equivalent requirements, or a recognized national certification. Waiver is discretionary, and applicants still complete the Maryland law exam and a state and FBI fingerprint check.

  • Endorsement route available

Citation: Md. Code, Health Occ. § 2-305

Which exams does Maryland require for a license?

Applicants pass the national exam and must also complete the board's law exam on the Maryland statute and regulations; an application is not complete until it is on file. Audiologists must also demonstrate oral competency.

  • Praxis exam
  • State jurisprudence exam

Does Maryland require fingerprints?

  • Fingerprint background check

Does Maryland offer a temporary SLP or audiology license?

ASHA reports that SLPs, audiologists and assistants licensed in another state may practice while a completed Maryland application is pending.

  • No temporary license

How do clinical fellows get licensed in Maryland?

Anyone practicing under supervision while finishing requirements, including clinical fellows, needs a limited license, applied for with the supervising licensee. It lasts one year and renews once; without a full license within two years, no new limited license is allowed.

  • Limited license

Citation: Md. Code, Health Occ. §§ 2-310 to 2-310.3

Does Maryland license SLP assistants?

SLPAs are licensed, with a limited license while they finish requirements. ASHA reports they need an approved associate degree or a bachelor's in the field plus 25 observation and 75 clinical assisting hours. A full-time SLP may supervise two full-time SLPAs, a part-time SLP one.

  • SLPA license (full or limited)

What audiologists need to know in Maryland

Maryland audiologists are licensed to fit and sell hearing aids. Each renewal requires proof that every audiometer in use was calibrated within the past 12 months.

  • Dispensing covered by the audiology license

How often does a Maryland SLP or audiology license renew?

Each renewal requires CE, a new state and national criminal history check, and audiometer calibration proof for audiologists. A 30-day grace period follows expiration. ASHA reports 30 CE hours every two years.

  • 30 CE hours per cycle
