What SLPs and audiologists miss in Louisiana

Can I practice in Louisiana on an ASLP Compact privilege?

Louisiana is issuing ASLP Compact privileges (since October 28, 2025). A speech-language pathologist or audiologist whose home state is also issuing can apply for a privilege to practice here through CompactConnect, and must apply, attest and pay personally. SLPAs and clinical fellows are not eligible.

Can an SLP or audiologist licensed elsewhere get a Louisiana license by endorsement?

Out-of-state SLPs and audiologists file the standard application with verifications of every license held, sent by each board, plus a Louisiana State Police fingerprint background check. Once all documents arrive, the board issues a 60-day grace period to work while it reviews the application.

Which exams does Louisiana require for a license?

Applicants show a passing Praxis score (board code R7331) or ASHA certification; audiologists may use ABA certification with the Praxis. Provisional SLPs have one year to submit a passing score. The board lists no state law exam.

Does Louisiana offer a temporary SLP or audiology license?

Out-of-state SLPs and audiologists with an unrestricted, equivalent license can hold a telehealth registration instead of a license. It covers telepractice only, costs $50, needs a state background check and renews every year.

  • No temporary license

How do clinical fellows get licensed in Louisiana?

Graduates who are not yet ASHA certified work on a provisional license while completing 36 weeks of full-time postgraduate experience. They send a signed breakdown of practicum hours and must submit a passing Praxis score within one year.

  • Provisional speech-language pathology license

Does Louisiana license SLP assistants?

SLPAs need a bachelor's in speech-language pathology and 225 practicum hours, the first 100 through an accredited program with no simulation hours; a provisional SLPA license covers the gap. ASHA reports a supervising SLP may oversee no more than three assistants or provisional assistants.

  • SLPA license (and provisional SLPA license)

What audiologists need to know in Louisiana

Audiologists dispense under the audiology license. Dispensing audiologists must put three of their 10 yearly CE hours into hearing aid topics, unless they opt out of dispensing for that year.

  • Dispensing covered by the audiology license

How often does a Louisiana SLP or audiology license renew?

Licenses run July 1 through June 30. Each year needs 10 CE clock hours, at least five tied directly to the licensed area; dual licensees need 15.

  • Renews every year
  • 10 CE hours per cycle
