What SLPs and audiologists miss in Iowa

Can I practice in Iowa on an ASLP Compact privilege?

Iowa has enacted the ASLP Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Until it does, practicing here takes a Iowa license, and a Iowa license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

  • Enacted, not issuing yet

Can an SLP or audiologist licensed elsewhere get a Iowa license by endorsement?

An applicant whose clinical fellowship was not supervised by an Iowa licensee must hold a current ASHA CCC or ABA certification. Out-of-state licensees also send verification from the most recent licensing jurisdiction and disclose any complaints. Someone from a state that did not license the profession may use work experience instead.

  • Endorsement route available

Which exams does Iowa require for a license?

The board's exam is the Praxis in speech pathology or audiology, with scores sent directly from ETS. The rules name no state law exam.

  • Praxis exam
  • No state jurisprudence exam

Does Iowa offer a temporary SLP or audiology license?

A nonresident with substantially the same qualifications may get a temporary permit for up to three months, filed before practice begins with a letter showing the need.

  • Temporary or limited license available

Citation: Iowa Admin. Code r. 481-740.7

How do clinical fellows get licensed in Iowa?

Clinical fellows hold a one-year temporary clinical license, renewable at the board's discretion, after 400 supervised clinical hours and the Praxis. The board must approve the supervision plan (nine months full time or equivalent) first, and changes need approval within 30 days.

  • Temporary clinical license

Citation: Iowa Admin. Code r. 481-740.6

Does Iowa license SLP assistants?

Iowa does not license SLPAs. A licensee using speech pathology assistants I or II keeps a written plan with on-site observation of 20 percent (level I) or 10 percent (level II) of patient care, and may use no more than three without board approval.

  • SLPAs are not licensed or registered

What audiologists need to know in Iowa

Since a 2024 law, Iowa audiologists no longer need a separate hearing aid specialist license and dispense under the audiology license, following the hearing aid dispensing rules.

  • Dispensing covered by the audiology license

Professional Services License or Statement of Professional Recognition in Iowa

School SLPs and audiologists need a Board of Educational Examiners credential: a professional services license with education coursework, or a statement of professional recognition backed by the state license.

How often does a Iowa SLP or audiology license renew?

Licenses renew every two years, from January 1 of an even year to December 31 of the next odd year. Each cycle needs 26 CE hours; up to 13 extra hours carry over. A license issued within six months of the renewal date skips that renewal.

  • Renews every 2 years
  • 26 CE hours per cycle
