What SLPs and audiologists miss in Arizona

Can I practice in Arizona on an ASLP Compact privilege?

Arizona has enacted the ASLP Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Until it does, practicing here takes a Arizona license, and a Arizona license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

  • Enacted, not issuing yet

Can an SLP or audiologist licensed elsewhere get a Arizona license by endorsement?

The department may license someone currently licensed in a state that meets Arizona's minimum standards. It waives the SLP exam for an applicant licensed in an equivalent state or holding the CCC, and waives an audiologist's education, rotation and exam requirements on the same basis.

  • Endorsement route available

Citation: A.R.S. §§ 36-1922, 36-1940.02

Which exams does Arizona require for a license?

SLPs and audiologists pass the national exam; an audiologist's exam must be within three years of applying unless waived. Only an audiologist licensed to fit and dispense hearing aids must also pass a state jurisprudence and ethics exam, within six months of licensure.

  • Praxis exam
  • No state jurisprudence exam

Does Arizona require fingerprints?

  • No fingerprint requirement

Does Arizona offer a temporary SLP or audiology license?

The only temporary license in the act is for SLPs completing postgraduate experience. Out-of-state providers can instead register with the department to provide telehealth to Arizona clients.

  • No temporary license

Citation: A.R.S. § 36-1940.03

How do clinical fellows get licensed in Arizona?

An SLP who meets every requirement except the postgraduate professional experience gets a temporary license by filing a plan for completing it. The holder works only under a fully licensed Arizona SLP and may renew the temporary license once.

  • Temporary license

Citation: A.R.S. § 36-1940.03

Does Arizona license SLP assistants?

SLPAs are licensed after an approved 60-credit training program and 100 hours of supervised clinical interaction, or ASHA's C-SLPA. They may not do swallowing screening or intervention, give diagnostic tests or interpret results, and need the supervising SLP present at most meetings. ASHA reports a cap of two full-time or three part-time SLPAs per supervisor.

  • SLPA license

What audiologists need to know in Arizona

Arizona issues an audiologist license and a separate audiologist license to fit and dispense hearing aids. The dispensing version adds a jurisprudence and ethics exam within six months of licensure.

  • Dispensing covered by the audiology license

Speech-Language Pathologist PreK-12 Certificate in Arizona

School SLPs hold an Arizona Department of Education certificate. A separate limited SLP license covers practice only for a local education agency or state-supported institution and requires the education department certificate.

Citation: A.R.S. § 36-1940.01(B)

How often does a Arizona SLP or audiology license renew?

Licenses renew every two years. ASHA reports 20 hours of CE per cycle for SLPs and audiologists; SLPAs need 10 hours a year.

  • Renews every 2 years
  • 20 CE hours per cycle
